Preservation

Preservation of the cherished
Summary –
This project is about the act of preserving. It’s closely linked to the concept of clean energy where renewable forms of energies are used to sustain the non-renewable resources. This installation is about collecting my classmate’s precious objects and preserving them. Understanding the sentimental values these objects carry. The whole act of preserving is like respecting their emotions and making these objects as valuable as the non-renewable forms of energy. As the sentiments these objects carry cannot be replaced by another object. Thus it closely relates to the concept of clean energy.
Objective-
To preserve the precious objects of my classmates and treat them as non-renewable energy or objects. To understand the immeasurable worth of these objects and retrieve them. This project is an interactive piece of art where I have collected my classmate’s precious objects and preserve them in gel wax. The whole act of preserving is the main objective of the project. It even deals with dematerialization of objects where once it’s preserved the owner removes it back and what is left behind is only the impression.
Rationale-
The term clean energy means sustainable energy. This installation deals with protecting the emotional values which is similar to the use of the non renewable energy like coal where what is left back is only impression if we don’t adopt to the use of clean energy only impressions of precious forms of energy like trees and fuel will be left for our later generation. With the act of preservation of precious objects it is an effort to convey to people to switch to clean energy and preserve the non-renewable forms ores else we will be left with an impression of trees and just the way.

The stories behind the objects

Jacking’s  key chain-
Her brother gave this key chain to her. He got it from Taiwan. It is the first gift her brother bought for her from his own earning, so it’s very valuable for her. The whole act of preserving that keychain was a very special gesture for her.

Eva’s earring
Her gesture of removing the earring she was wearing in college that day was very touching. Her spontaneous action of giving me the earring as soon as I asked for an object carries a lot of value for me. I was really touched by her gesture and the earrings hold a lot of worth for me.

Soumya’s bracelet -
The evil eye bracelet she gave me to preserve is the one she bought from Istanbul, which has all her memories of the trip. It was the best trip she ever had though she lost her camera during the trip so the only trace of her trip is this bracelet, which I preserved for her.

Cassendra’s  chain-
This chain was give to her by her best friend and carries a lot of sentimental values. The key in the chain is ancestral and very antique looking. The preservation of the chain is more like a stoppage of time.

Grishma’s ring-
The ring has special significance for Grishma. It was given to her by her mother and it originally belonged to her grand mother .Her mother believed this ring carries the blessings of her granny and will always help her in difficult times and shower blessings.
Grishma had never parted with this ring till the date I asked her for something close to her heart for this assignment .I appreciate her trust for given me the ring to preserve her sentiments in the wax.

Lets all of us be aware of our place in the universe.
